A MUST DO List To Restore Democracy

Today (03-04-07) the New York Times editorial proposed a “Must Do” list for the American democracy as a “moral imperative to show the world the United States can be tough on terrorism without sacrificing its humanity and the rule of law.” Following is the Times’ list with a few editorial changes from yours truly:

· Restore Habeas Corpus

· Repeal the Military Commissions Act of 2006

· Ban Torture

· Stop Illegal Spying

· Close the C.I.A. Prisons

· Account for “Ghost Prisoners”

· Ban Extraordinary Rendition

· Tighten the Definition of Combatant

· Screen Prisoners Fairly and Effectively

· Ban Tainted Evidence

· Ban Secret Evidence

· Define “Classified” Evidence More Carefully

· Respect the Right to Counsel

· Close the Guantanamo Camp

Finally, change our mission, not just our tactics in Iraq. It is time for us to take back our democracy before we have totally lost it.

I lived in England for twenty years and know that the English and even more the Europeans take American professions of freedom and democracy with a large pinch of salt. Some of this may well be envy: "We were Top Dog once and you are Top Dog now". But a good deal of it has to do with the kinds of considerations you raise. Being a Continent in itself, America tends not to be much aware of how others view it. A former President said that there is nothing wrong with America that what is right with it cannot correct. The challenge is to be alert to what "America" means in the larger sense: the Idea of America. Melville called it the last best hope of humanity: there is something to live up to. It is partly a matter of realizing that the American Vision is larger than the American Dream. Lincoln said that he valued the dollar but in the final instance placed the man above the dollar.
