This is a week of irony. Monday (19th) marks the 4th anniversary of our current
Yes, in nature and history, there is a dialectic or yin/yang between evil and good, death and life, winter and spring.
With at least four civil wars raging in
Isn’t it odd that our arrogance may be responsible for both upsetting the delicate chemistry of the atmosphere, accelerating global warming, and our hegemonic desire to dominate the world?
Do we have to wait for nature to teach us about the fragile nature of our evolving planet? Can we trust that our species may evolve to discover the self-destructive nature of war and unbridled hubris?
It is a week for serious reflection and action.

To those who don't already know it I recommend "God's Grandeur," the sonnet by Gerard Manly Hopkins, the Catholic priest who published virtually nothing in his lifetime because his superior thought his poetry would interfere with his religious vication. It may be difficult for some of us to share Hopkins' faith, anguished though it was, or his belief that "nature is never spent" because the Holy Ghost always broods over it but nevertheless he gives poignant expression to a difficult optimism.
